If for no other reason than self-sufficiency in one area tends to bleed over. Also, that it helps to destigmatize dirty jobs and applies the clue-by-four to people who don’t actually understand how anything around them works or is made.

People think IA and shop classes are for those who are going into technical fields. I think they are an essential part of a liberal arts education.

“If I have to take ‘your side’s stupid-ass “How To Create a Social Problem” sociology class, you can pick up a hammer one time in your miserable mouthbreathing lives” - RamblinRover’s BSME id, paraphrased

Too bad that won’t fit on a bumper sticker.

If a modern liberal arts education were in any way an overlapping set with the old vaunted “classical education” I would be less salty. Maybe. As it is, outside of one ethics class*, I can’t say I felt enriched in western civilization as such. I had to do that on my own - bah.
*We did flit over
Nicomachean Ethics
and Kant on the way to (hurr durr) Dewey, so that’s something.

Education has largely become stratified to model our expectations of peoples’ places in society. The old classical education model is seen as an outmoded anachronism.
This is a symptom of what’s wrong with our society.

Also, inasmuch as elitists try to “preserve” the old “marks of fine breeding” for themselves, they’re part of the problem. Those who pursue ever-more-rarified snobberies as a mark of class...
reinforce class divisions
, and decry the coarsening of society even as they fail to make the case that any of it’s worth saving - because they value it for the wrong reasons! - and they have successfully deterred others from interest
because utopists and elitists are such assholes.
And stupid.
Good job enhancing class boundary distinctions at the expense of *relative* scale having any meaning in terms of character depth or even grounding in reality, idiots . Upper Class Twit of the Year duking it out with Honey Boo Boo for all eternity, and I’m supposed to listen to what UCT says because... uh... class.
I decline.

I took metal shop and turned cold rolled steel on a metal lathe. There was also a welding class and a wood shop, but I didn’t take either of those. Kids said they’d smoke dope under the welding hood because exhaust fan. The high school where I taught closed its metal shop and I brought home one of the drill presses and it’s part of my workshop now. I did not steal the grinder and I regret that now.

I’ll bet you do. That’d be a nice piece to pick up free.
One of the guys in the department where I did my post doc allegedly smoked week in the fume hood with his student for the same reason. Stupid way to risk losing your job if you ask me, but hey.
